FEB 12 - MAR 15, 2026
Founders Theatre
Golden Bough Playhouse,
Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA

Book by Michael Frayn

Directed by Michael Champlin & Katie O'Bryon Champlin

Rated PG-13

Often hailed as “the funniest farce ever written,” Noises Off is a dazzling tour de force of theatrical comedy—an intricately crafted, laugh-out-loud celebration of backstage chaos, fragile egos, and the unpredictable magic of live theatre. Since its premiere in 1982, the play has become one of the most beloved comedies in modern theatrical history, renowned for its precision, intelligence, and relentless momentum.

PacRep’s production will be directed by husband-and-wife team Michael Champlin and Katie O’Bryon Champlin and will feature a standout ensemble of Monterey County’s finest comedic performers. The cast is led by local favorites Julie Hughett as Dotty Otley and Michael Storm as Lloyd Dallas and features Actor’s Equity Association (AEA) guest artist Michael Jacobs as Seldon Mowbray. Also appearing are Keith Larson (Frederick Fellowes), Jennifer Newman (Belinda Blair), Izzy Pedego (Poppy Norton-Taylor), Brandon Silberstein (Tim Allgood), Dale Tompson (Garry Lejeune), and Michelle Vallentyne (Brooke Ashton).

Noises Off follows the unraveling of a hopelessly incompetent British sex farce titled Nothing On, charting its descent from a disastrous final dress rehearsal to a touring production in total collapse. The play’s ingenious three-act structure offers a front-row view of theatrical catastrophe: Act One presents the show as the audience sees it, riddled with missed cues and mounting confusion; Act Two turns the set around (literally) to expose the silent, backstage mayhem mid-performance; and Act Three returns to the audience perspective weeks later, when the production has completely imploded into gloriously uncontrolled farce.

What sets Noises Off apart is its astonishing clockwork precision. Every slammed door, flying prop, and perfectly timed pratfall is meticulously choreographed, making it one of the most challenging comedies ever staged. Actors must approach the madness with utter sincerity, allowing the humor to erupt naturally from circumstance rather than performance.

Beneath the laughter lies a keenly observed portrait of human nature and the peculiar ecosystem of the theatre. Frayn captures the emotional volatility, rivalries, and resilience of artists determined to keep going—no matter how wrong everything becomes. Despite its satirical edge, Noises Off is ultimately generous in spirit, serving as a heartfelt love letter to live performance and the indomitable will to make the show go on.
