Now in its’ second year, PacRep will present the world premiere winner of PacRep’s 2008 Hyperion Project II Playwriting Contest, La Honda by Jeff Carter from November 5 through 15, in the intimate Circle Theatre. La Honda is an atmospheric film noir story that focuses on the relationship between Frank Macklin, a one time TV actor and now a shady businessman, and his father Tommy, a formerly blacklisted Hollywood director, who is now living in seclusion in a rundown bungalow in the woods of La Honda, California. The play deals with the estranged relationship between father and son, as Frank, the son, appears at his father’s house in the midst of a shady deal. One of the things that father and son have in common is an instant attraction for a neighbor, Dee. The other two characters in the mix are Doug, a runaway teen who is staying with the old man serving as a surrogate son, and a small time hood named Alfredo, who is after Frank to collect a debt that is owed.

Hyperion Competition III

Pacific Repertory Theatre has a 26 year history of encouraging new plays, having staged almost one hundred new works since 1984. Recognizing the need to nurture new plays and the artists who create them, the Hyperion Project will present either a fully staged reading or a workshop production of the winning play as part of PacRep's annual season.

Application Procedures

The Hyperion Competition is open to playwrights writing in English, who reside in California. Only plays that have neither been published nor had a previous full-scale production, either amateur or professional will be considered. As the winning entry, the play will be given either a fully staged reading or a production in November of 2010 at the Golden Bough Playhouse's Circle Theatre in Carmel.
  • Playwrights, who reside in California are invited to send, by regular mail (no faxes or e-mails, please), two copies each of a cover letter + a brief synopsis of their full-length play, character descriptions and scene breakdown + 10 pages of their script which represents the work as a whole, unbound and with each page clearly numbered + a resume to the address provided below.
  • Please include a postcard, stamped and addressed to yourself, which our Literary Department will return as confirmation of the receipt of your materials. Also, please include a self-addressed and stamped envelope (SASE) in which your materials can eventually be returned.
  • For Hyperion III, neither one-acts, nor musicals will be eligible.
  • Casts should be limited to 5 actors maximum, regardless of the number of parts they might play.
  • Settings should be limited to one theatrical setting which can represent any number of locations.
  • Only one submission per calendar year is allowed.
  • Submissions for Hyperion III will be accepted only from April 1 through July 1, 2009 and must be postmarked accordingly.
  • Response time for scripts under consideration can vary between two and six months, after receipt. Please be assured that the Literary Department will do its best to respond in a timely manner. The play chosen for a 2010 production will be announced in December 2009 and every entrant will have received a response by that date.
  • If a full script should ultimately be requested by the PacRep Literary Department, we will contact the author directly. Please do not submit any unsolicited full-length scripts to PacRep. They will not be read. If you have included a SASE, they will be returned; if not, they will be recycled.
  • The legal clearance of any material included in the play which is not already in the public domain is the full responsibility of the playwright.
  • PacRep is not responsible for protecting either the rights of authorship of submitted materials, or the possibility of duplication of ideas or concepts by competing submissions.

FEES
A $10.00 non-refundable reader’s fee must accompany the submission of the materials noted above.
